giant Sony has issued an apology to Manchester Cathedral in the row over the use of images of the Cathedral in a computer game.
Last weekend the Cathedral issued a demand for an apology for the use of the imagery in the computer game ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’, which has already sold over 1 million copies since going on sale in March. They first of all asked Sony to apologise for the unauthorised use of the setting and withdraw the game, but a spokesman for Sony at first claimed that permission had been sought throughout the game’s development phase.Today it appeared that no permission had been given when the Cathedral said they had received a letter from Sony Computer Entertainment. Although the text of that letter has not been made public yet, a spokesman for the Dean and Chapter said: “We acknowledge the admission by Sony that the building in the game is Manchester Cathedral. We thank Sony for the apology they have made.“However, we do not move from the position that we are against violence and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the Cathedral. “We are pleased that Sony wish to come and meet with us in Manchester as today we offered them such an invitation.”The demands of the Cathedral were boosted on Wednesday when British Prime Minister Tony Blair appeared to back the Cathedral and warned large corporations to take note of morality in their business activities. It is not clear at this stage whether Sony is planning to accede to the Cathedral’s demands to withdraw the game. The game, one of the flagship titles for the new Playstation 3 (PS3) game platform, allows users to deploy a range of weapons in a shoot-out in what appears to be the Cathedral’s nave.
